Why should we have to drink so much water? You hear about it all the time, 1 litre, 2 litres per day. Bottled, sparkling, mineral, glaciar the types of water are endless and for something that comes relativley free from the tap, water companies make oodles of profit on it.

Unlike the snacks and sugar laden fizzy drinks that the manufacturers also push upon us, we really do need to consume water. At least two litres a day for optimum body performance. Buy why? Here a few reasons –

1. Drinking Water Helps Maintain the Balance of Body Fluids. Your body is composed of about 60% water. The functions of these bodily fluids include digestion, absorption, circulation, creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients, and maintenance of body temperature.

When you’re low on fluids, the brain triggers the body’s thirst mechanism. And unless you are taking medications that make you thirsty, you should listen to those cues and get yourself a drink of water, juice, milk, coffee — anything but alcohol. “Alcohol interferes with the brain and kidney communication and causes excess excretion of fluids which can then lead to dehydration,” (Guest)

2. Water Can Help Control Calories. For years, dieters have been drinking lots of water as a weight loss strategy. While water doesn’t have any magical effect on weight loss, substituting it for higher calorie beverages can certainly help.

Food with high water content tends to look larger, its higher volume requires more chewing, and it is absorbed more slowly by the body, which helps you feel full. Water-rich foods include fruits, vegetables, broth-based soups, oatmeal, and beans.

3. Water Helps Energise Muscles. Cells that don’t maintain their balance of fluids and electrolytes shrivel, which can result in muscle fatigue. “When muscle cells don’t have adequate fluids, they don’t work as well and performance can suffer,” says Guest.

4. Water Helps Keep Skin Looking Good. Your skin contains plenty of water, and functions as a protective barrier to prevent excess fluid loss. But don’t expect over-hydration to erase wrinkles or fine lines.

“Dehydration makes your skin look more dry and wrinkled, which can be improved with proper hydration,’  “But once you are adequately hydrated, the kidneys take over and excrete excess fluids.” You can also help “lock” moisture into your skin by using moisturizer, which creates a physical barrier to keep moisture in.

5. Water Helps Your Kidneys. Body fluids transport waste products in and out of cells. The main toxin in the body is blood urea nitrogen, a water-soluble waste that is able to pass through the kidneys to be excreted in the urine, explains Guest. “Your kidneys do an amazing job of cleansing and ridding your body of toxins as long as your intake of fluids is adequate,” he says.

When you’re getting enough fluids, urine flows freely, is light in color and free of odor. When your body is not getting enough fluids, urine concentration, color, and odor increases because the kidneys trap extra fluid for bodily functions.

If you chronically drink too little, you may be at higher risk for kidney stones, especially in warm climates.

6. Water Helps Maintain Normal Bowel Function. Adequate hydration keeps things flowing along your gastrointestinal tract and prevents constipation. When you don’t get enough fluid, the colon pulls water from stools to maintain hydration — and the result is constipation. “Adequate fluid and fiber is the perfect combination, because the fluid pumps up the fiber and acts like a broom to keep your bowel functioning properly,” says Kolemay.

 Tips to Help You Drink More Water

If you think you need to be drinking more, here are some tips to increase your fluid intake and reap the benefits of water:

1. Have a drink with every snack and meal.

2. Choose an herbal tea you enjoy; you’re likely to drink more liquids if you like the way they taste.

3. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Their high water content will add to your hydration. About 20% of our fluid intake comes from foods.

4. Keep a bottle of water with you in your car, at your desk, or in your bag.

5. Choose drinks that meet your individual needs. If you’re watching calories, always choose water.

The older we get the harder it is to lose weight unfortunately.

We know its unhealthy to be overweight. We know that additional body fat can cause problems for our internal organs, our blood pressure and our bones and joints which which are all ailments that appear to rise with age.

This is another good reason to to reduce weight and improve your health and quality of life. With age the importance of weight loss can jostle for position with all the other responsibilities, lifestyle and health niggles we face.

Know Your Nuts

There is a lot of talk about eating nuts and seeds as a healthy snack, and quite right too.

A good variety of raw nuts like almonds, pecans, macadamia and brazil nuts in your diet add many health benefits giving you a whole host of powerful vitamins, minerals and fats, essential for your good health.

Nuts and seeds contain heart healthy fats which maintain the normal structure of every cell in our body. The problem with nuts and weight loss is when we eat too much of them. A small handful of raw sunflower seeds can be 150 cals, have that twice a day for a week and you have added 2100 calories into your diet which will impact your weight loss goals.

Incorporate them into your meal planning and if necessary measure out your portions in advance. I know it’s all to easy to scoff a good few anything before you get to the actual portion part. Have say around 20g of mixed nuts with an apple as one of your daily snacks and you will see how it diminshes hunger pangs  as well as giving you important protein based energy.

Try it for a week instead of your usual snack and see how you get on.

I get a lot of queries about the virtual gastric band hypnotherapy, it is a very effective procedure and the results gained thorough an entirely natural and safe process can be staggering.

A lot of inquirers tell me that they have been considering going in for the real operation as they think they ‘have tried every diet under the sun’ to no avail, but whilst researching gastric band surgery luckily have come across my information and have got in touch for more information.

Another common theme is that a lot of these ladies and gents do not have that much weight to lose. I mean, I know we have our BMI guidelines, weight/height/body type ratios but a lot of you just want to be able to fit in a decent size pair of jeans or a pretty dress again. This is a direct result of trying to fulfill your emotional needs from an external substance, be that food or alcohol (Can a gastric band make you an alcoholic?) the emotional patterns and cycles continue, and you are still not happy – or slimmer.

I am not saying you can never again eat chocolate or have pizza, instead you will have the power and control to think, that you just don’t want it TODAY.

I have some great clients and they keep inspiring which inturn makes me inspire you, one of my ladies had her surgery consultation in Spring (she only had around 3 stone to lose) luckily got in touch with me before the operation and is currently 2 st 7 lbs lighter and hasn’t touched a sweet/chocolate/cake/biscuit (her vices) since. All whilst cooking and eating the same as the rest of the family, going on holiday, working, socialising – all the things that we have to do every day/week/month and year.

I have also worked with ladies for whom unfortunately gastric band surgery hasn’t gone to plan and have been in immense danger which is unbelievably sad and frightening, I will cover more about this in another future post.

Whats your excuse not to work out? We can make all the excuses we like but really there is no excuse that will justify you not being fit and healthy. Keep fit doesn’t mean endless mind numbing hours at the gym, do something you enjoy like a social sport like tennis or roam the countryside on your bicycle, it should be something you enjoy  and not a chore.

I workout outdoors where ever possible, the scenery is ever changing and the fresh air makes a world of difference. I also travel a lot so belonging to any gym doesn’t work out for me. You don’t have to splash out on any expensive equipment either and nowadays a lot of exercise routines and advice are available online, to keep you motivated and give you something different every time.

Below is one of the workouts I enjoy doing and I like it because unlike lots of ab work, you can stand and do it, which is great when I am on my travels and space is tight. Tiffany has lots of mini workouts online great for women so give it a go! See what you think and you can put something together for yourself that you really enjoy.

Why You Should Be Using Coconut Oil

What oils do you use to cook with? Vegetable oils, Olive oils, butter or ghee? Different oils have many different properties and you absolutely need fats and oils in your body for good health – particularly if you are trying to loose weight.

Vegetable oils have no place in your diet, its highly processed and you will find this in abundance in your cakes, biscuits, sweets and crisps. Real Olive oil is very beneficial for good heart health and is best consumed as a drizzle, heating it can change it’s molecular structure so you lose the benefits.

Butter is ok to eat. There, I said it. What do you think is better for you, a completely dairy natural product with no additives or a tub of trans-fat lardiness that will NEVER ROT. EVER. That’s right, leave a tub of margarine or low fat spread out in the kitchen and it will stay exactly the same. You could even leave it out in the garden for years and not a bird, animal or insect will touch it. What do you think that’s doing to your insides?

A lot of people use those 1 kcal spray oils, take a look at the ingredients in these things. If you must, please use sparingly and rarely. Having tried to cook (unsuccessfully) various ways without oil, minimal oil, oil replacements and ‘steam frying in water’ I am thankful to have discovered the wonder of cooking with coconut oil. So beneficial for you, you can eat it by the spoonful.
